WORCESTER—The Worcester School Committee has solidified a three-year contract with new Superintendent Brian Allen, who will officially begin his new job next month.

Allen has served Worcester Public Schools for 27 years, most recently as deputy superintendent, chief financial officer, and chief operations officer. The school committee voted 8-1 on May 1 to promote Allen to superintendent, succeeding departing Superintendent Rachel Monárrez.

After a lengthy executive session on June 5, the committee voted unanimously to approve a three-year contract that will see Allen earn $292,000 in his first year, increasing to $300,700 in July of 2026, and to $309,783 in July of 2027.

Allen has spent the first month since his appointment engaging both the public and the school community including a recent interview with the Worcester Guardian. After his contract was confirmed, Allen thanked the school committee and acknowledged the responsibility he has inherited as he prepares to lead the district into the future.

“I’m ready both professionally and personally to meet the moment,” said Allen, “as I’ve done in each role that I’ve had over the last three decades in Worcester – with determination, humility, and unwavering commitment. Throughout my career, I’ve had the distinct privilege of working alongside five superintendents and two interim superintendents. Each of them has shaped my understanding of leadership and the progress we are building today stands on the foundation of their legacies.”

The new superintendent revealed the theme for his first year: “Vision to Action.” The 2025/2026 school year will focus on “turning shared aspirations into tangible lasting change” including sharpening the focus on Tier-1 instruction.

However, Allen also acknowledged the challenges he will face as a first-time superintendent including the continued recovery in a post-pandemic world, growing uncertainly concerning education funding at the federal level, and the approaching conclusion of the Student Opportunity Act Phase-In.

Allen thanked the community and stakeholders for their outpouring of support and said he looks forward to continuing to build those relationships and becoming even more engrained in the Worcester Public Schools.

“Every interaction has reaffirmed what I’ve always believed: our greatest strength lies in our people – our students, our families, our educators, and our community partners. Looking ahead I’m excited to continue these conversations and deepen our connections.”
