State pledges $25M for Worcester Auditorium (The Aud) revival

Governor Healey’s commitment aims to unlock full $100M project to restore city landmark and boost regional economy

WORCESTER—Governor Maura Healey announced a major state investment Thursday to help bring one of the city’s most iconic and long-dormant landmarks back to life.

The Healey-Driscoll administration has committed $25 million in matching funds to support the $100 million redevelopment of the Worcester Memorial Auditorium, a historic 1933 structure that has sat vacant for 25 years.

The state’s multi-year funding pledge is intended to help unlock additional tax credits, private philanthropy, and further financing to finally move the project forward.

“Our administration wants to support this project and play a part in returning the Worcester Memorial Auditorium to its place as a vital cornerstone of Worcester’s civic and cultural identity,” said Healey in the announcement. “Our hope is that the state’s commitment… will spark others to step up and provide the full financing necessary to make this project a reality.”

The redevelopment is led by the nonprofit Architectural Heritage Foundation (AHF), which envisions a multipurpose cultural facility blending historic preservation with modern programming. Proposed uses include concerts, conferences, weddings, immersive exhibits, robotics competitions, and e-sports tournaments — all in a revitalized space designed to draw residents and visitors alike to Lincoln Square.

“This $25 million match… is a game changer,” said City Manager Eric Batista in the release, noting the Aud’s role as a central part of Worcester’s downtown and its economic potential.

The “Aud,” as it’s affectionately known, was originally built to honor Worcester residents who served in World War I and once hosted basketball games, civic ceremonies, and performances by legends such as Bob Dylan, Louis Armstrong, and the Rolling Stones.

AHF President and CEO Sean McDonnell called the state’s investment “transformational,” adding that it paves the way to restore the building as a cultural and civic landmark “while honoring the veterans—past and present—for whom it was originally built.”

Local officials, state lawmakers, and preservationists echoed their support, hailing the announcement as a long-awaited step toward both preserving a cherished structure and breathing new life into a prominent corner of the city.

The $25 million match is expected to attract additional resources needed to fully fund the project, potentially setting the stage for a new chapter in the Aud’s storied history.
