Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:
- Skate to a Railers holiday doubleheader: Get in the festive spirit with the Worcester Railers’ Home for the Holidays Series at the DCU Center. The fun kicks off Saturday, Dec. 28, at 6:05 p.m. (doors at 5:05 p.m.) and continues Sunday, Dec. 29, at 3:05 p.m. (doors at 2:05 p.m.). Enjoy free pre-game skating on Worcester Common’s Oval, exclusive giveaways (beanies on Saturday, holiday socks on Sunday), and exciting hockey action. Plus, Santa TRAX, the Railers cheer team, and prizes for holiday-themed attire make this a can’t-miss event.
- Jubilation in the FrontRoom: Celebrate the triumphant reopening of WCUW’s FrontRoom at 910 Main St. on Saturday, Dec. 28, with a night of music and merriment. Doors open at 6 p.m., featuring an opening set by Maia Simone, accompanied by Dan Hunt on guitar and Michael Severens on cello, followed by Jubilee Gardens. This world, folk, pop, and rock ensemble includes Jubilee Connolly, Ed Melikian on oud, Rainer Reichel on violin, and more. After overcoming red tape and fire alarms, the venue is back and ready to host unforgettable events—don’t miss this festive kickoff.
- Community Kwanzaa celebration: Everyone is invited to this annual event, happening this year on Saturday, Dec. 28, from 5-8 p.m. at the YWCA. Learn about Kwanzaa and celebrate family, community and culture with performances, vendors, giveaways, and more. Please bring a dish for the community karamu (potluck) – no pork dishes.
- Bring on the bricks: Brick Fest takes over the DCU Center on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Highlights include Guinness World Record Challenge: Help create a massive floor mosaic; a giant brick pit with more than 200,000 colorful LEGO bricks, life-size models with awe-inspiring builds from around the world, brick derby races, a glow zone, meet and greet with LEGO masters, merchandise for sale and a lot more.
- Big laughs at Mechanics Hall: Bob Marley the comedian lives in Maine, and he considers that the best place to live in the whole universe. He’s featured regularly on Sirius XM radio and he even won their Superbowl of Comedy. Marley, who’s headlining at Mechanics Hall on Saturday, Dec. 28, at 8 p.m., has put out more than 20 comedy CDs and DVDs. He was inducted into The Guinness Book of World’s Records for “the longest stand-up comedy show by an individual” at 40 hrs of straight stand-up. He’s been on more than 100 TV shows including Leno, Letterman, Conan, Jimmy Fallon, Craig Ferguson, and Comedy Central to name just a few. He co-starred in “Boondock Saints” I and II “All Saints Day” playing Detective Greenly. He has toured the U.S., Europe, Canada, Kuwait, and Iraq. Need we say more?
