Worcester’s more hopping than people realize. Each week, the Worcester Guardian highlights events and activities you may want to consider over the weekend ahead.
Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:
- Early show with the Hip Swayers—the full band, acoustic: This group from West Tatnuck plays good time, get up and dance music that combines tight rhythms, searing solos and soulful harmonies in a mix of originals, old time country and reverb-soaked surf. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Check them out Saturday, noon to 2 p.m., at the Acoustic Java Roastery and Tasting Room.
- Autism acceptance night at the Railers: It’s a sensory friendly autism acceptance night at the DCU Center as the Railers take on Trois-Rivières Lions on Friday, Jan. 5. The puck drops at 7 p.m. Accommodations on this special night sponsored by HMEA’s Autism Resource Central include a sensory room, no strobe lights or train horns, and ear plugs provided. Contact Brittany at bbeaver@hmea.org to reserve your tickets.
- Hey boys and girls, learn to curl: Ever been fascinated watching the Olympics and wanted to try this mysterious sport? You can, right here at the Worcester Ice Center on Harding Street from 9-11:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5. This Learn to Curl class is, of course, designed to give participants a quick intro to the sport. All ages and abilities are welcome. Then, you’ll be ready for the weekly pickup leagues that happen at the rink. For information about signing up, go to colonialcurling.com.
- Even the losers should hit Greendale’s this weekend: Petty Larceny, the area’s premier Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tribute band, returns to one of its favorite haunts – Greendale’s – on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 8:30 p.m. The band plays all the hits, from Refugee to Even the Losers to Breakdown, and even some more obscure nuggets. This show also marks guitarist-singer’s Phil Maltais’s last show with the band before welcoming new member Brian Martin.
- BBQ and beer: BBQ Underground is setting up shop at Redemption Rock Brewing on Saturday, Jan. 6, from 3-8 p.m., serving up smoked goodness that includes pulled chicken, pulled pork, brisket and sliders. Pair it with some beers at the Rock and call it a good time.
