Editorial Independence Policy
The Worcester Guardian maintains complete editorial independence from all funding sources, donors, and outside influences.
The Worcester Guardian follows the editorial independence standards set forth by the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) to ensure our journalism serves the public interest above all else.
Core Principles
1. Editorial Authority
The Worcester Guardian’s editorial staff has complete control over all editorial content and decisions. Our editors and reporters determine:
- Which stories to cover and how to cover them
- The angle, tone, and content of all articles
- Which sources to interview and quote
- Headlines, photo selection, and story placement
- All editorial content without interference from funders, donors, or board members
2. Financial Support Independence
We maintain a strict separation between our newsroom and our revenue operations:
- Donors have no influence over our editorial decisions or content
- We refuse any donation that comes with strings attached or expectations of favorable coverage
- Our editorial staff does not participate in fundraising activities that could compromise our independence
- Advertisers and sponsors have no control over editorial content
- We clearly distinguish between editorial content and any sponsored content
3. Coverage Without Bias
Our coverage decisions are based solely on news judgment and public interest:
- We cover all newsworthy stories fairly and accurately, regardless of funding relationships
- We hold donors and non-donors to the same editorial standards
- We investigate and report critically on donors when warranted by the news
- Financial support does not guarantee coverage or positive coverage
- We disclose any potential conflicts of interest in our reporting
4. Transparency
We are transparent about our funding and editorial policies:
- We publicly disclose all donors contributing $5,000 or more annually
- We clearly communicate our editorial independence policy to all donors
- We make this policy publicly available on our website
- We address reader questions and concerns about potential conflicts of interest
- We correct errors promptly and transparently
Donor Communication
All donors receive clear communication about our editorial independence policy before their first contribution. We explain that:
- Their support does not buy influence over our coverage
- We may cover them critically if the news warrants it
- They cannot request or expect favorable coverage in exchange for their donation
- They cannot review or approve stories before publication
- Editorial decisions are made solely by our editorial staff
Board Oversight
Our board of directors provides organizational oversight and ensures financial sustainability but does not interfere with editorial decisions. The board:
- Does not review or approve stories before publication
- Does not influence story selection or coverage decisions
- Does not interfere with reporter assignments or investigations
- Respects the editorial firewall between governance and journalism
- Upholds and protects editorial independence as a core organizational value
