Worcester residents looking for a break from the heat will have several places to cool off Friday and Saturday, as another stretch of hot, humid weather settles over the city.
With a heat advisory in effect and a high heat index forecast for Aug. 7 and 8, the city is activating cooling centers at the Worcester Senior Center, Worcester Public Library and Worcester 311, according to an announcement from the city. Water will be available at each location.
On Friday, the Worcester Senior Center, 128 Providence St., serves as a cooling center from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Worcester Public Library’s Main Branch, 3 Salem Square, opens from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., while Worcester 311, 799 Main St., is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Two locations remain available Saturday. The Main Library opens from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Worcester 311 serves as a cooling center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
All three facilities can be reached by Worcester Regional Transit Authority buses, which remain fare-free. The WRTA also offers curb-to-curb transportation for riders eligible for ADA service. Information on routes and transportation services is available by calling 508-791-9782.
The cooling centers come as city officials caution that the combination of high temperatures and humidity can make it more difficult for the body to regulate its temperature, increasing the risk of heat-related illness.
Residents are being encouraged to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous physical activity when possible and check in on neighbors, particularly those who may be more vulnerable to prolonged heat.
