Portions of South Worcester Playground will begin closing next week as the city launches renovations that will keep some of the Cambridge Street recreational facilities unavailable through next summer.
The handball and basketball courts at South Worcester Playground, 380 Cambridge St., will close beginning Sept. 1, according to an announcement Thursday from the city’s Parks, Recreation & Cemetery Department.
That work is expected to continue through summer 2027.
The adjacent Babe Ruth baseball field will also be unavailable during the project. The city said the field must remain closed for safety reasons until the court renovations are completed.
A separate renovation of the playground is scheduled to begin later in September.
The playground will close Sept. 21, with that portion of the work expected to be completed on or before Oct. 21, according to the city’s announcement.
The city did not provide details Thursday about the scope or cost of either renovation project.
