Shrewsbury Street to celebrate Italian heritage with parade, music and family festivities Sunday

Worcester’s Italian Heritage Parade returns Oct. 11, with a procession down Shrewsbury Street and a free festival featuring music, food and family activities at East Park

For generations, Shrewsbury Street has been one of the city’s most recognizable centers of Italian-American culture, its restaurants, businesses and neighborhood traditions helping shape a distinctive corner of Worcester.

On Sunday, that heritage takes center stage as the Shrewsbury Street Italian Heritage Parade returns, bringing a procession through the neighborhood and an expanded day of music, food and family festivities to nearby East Park.

The Oct. 11 parade steps off at noon at Belmont Street and travels along Shrewsbury Street to Washington Square. The celebration continues at Cristoforo Colombo Park, commonly known as East Park, where organizers are introducing a vendor fair featuring food, crafts, live entertainment and children’s activities.

Admission is free, and the event will take place rain or shine.

Now in its fifth year under the current organizing committee, the parade will feature high school bands and teams, antique cars, floats, entertainment groups and local public figures.

Organization secretary Jody Roberge told the Worcester Guardian that the variety of participants is central to the parade’s appeal.

“We hate to highlight anyone in particular — each group’s participation helps to make this a great event,” Roberge said.

This year’s grand marshal is Robert “Gus” Giordano, owner and operator of Maxwell Silverman’s Luciano’s Restaurant at Worcester’s Union Station.

Other honorees include Anthony Petrone, who serves as parade mayor; Mia Layman, named Miss Italian Heritage; and Jim Polito, recipient of the Community Voice Award.

Roberge said honorees are selected through a committee process that welcomes nominations of people who have distinguished themselves through their careers and community involvement, particularly those known for giving back or helping others.

One of the biggest additions this year is the East Park Vendor Fair, which opens at 10:30 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m.

The fair will bring together food trucks and vendors selling Italian specialties, including bread, cannoli and other baked goods, alongside jewelry, candles, pottery, wooden crafts, 3D-printed creations and other handmade items.

Free bounce houses are available for the kids and live music begins at 1 p.m. with a performance by the CBD Music Therapy Rick Trio.

The day’s activities begin even earlier, with a soccer tournament scheduled for 9 a.m.

The parade and festival celebrate the Italian-American heritage that has long been part of Shrewsbury Street’s identity. Generations of Italian immigrants and their descendants helped establish the neighborhood’s restaurants, businesses and community institutions, leaving a cultural imprint that remains visible today.

Although Shrewsbury Street is now widely known as one of Worcester’s premier dining destinations, its Italian-American roots remain an important part of the neighborhood’s character.

For organizers, the parade is as much about welcoming the broader community as it is about honoring those traditions.

“What we like people to take away from parade day, or any of our fundraising events throughout the year, is that our main focus is to bring people together,” Roberge said. “That’s what being Italian is all about! We want everyone to feel welcome, and we want to share our culture with others. The food, the music, the history, we have to keep that spirit alive!!”

Spectators are encouraged to line Shrewsbury Street for the noon procession before heading to East Park for the afternoon festivities.

The celebration will also continue at Union Station, where an after-parade gathering will honor Giordano. The event will feature hors d’oeuvres and a viewing of the New England Patriots game from 1 to 4 p.m. Organizers say everyone is invited to attend.
