WORCESTER—Worcester will soon have a new top public health official.
City Manager Eric D. Batista announced Friday the appointment of Seema Dixit as the city’s commissioner of health and human services, effective Feb. 17, according to a city release.
Dixit brings more than 25 years of experience in public health leadership, most recently serving as deputy director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, where she has worked since 2003. In that role, she helped oversee major public health programs and operations.
She previously served as the department’s community mitigation & enforcement lead during its COVID-19 response and as director of environmental health, the release states.
“Dixit brings a wealth of experience leading public health programs and operations,” Batista said in the release. “She has proven success in managing multimillion-dollar programs, leading interagency partnerships, and advancing policy. I look forward to working together to advance the health and wellbeing of all Worcester residents.”
In the same announcement, Dixit said she is “deeply honored” to take on the role and looks forward to working with city staff, community partners and residents “to strengthen public health, expand access to essential services, and build equitable health systems as deserved by the community.”
Dixit holds a master’s degree in international health and public policy and a master of public health in epidemiology and health administration from Tufts University. She also earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in human nutrition from SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai, India, according to the release.
