Cara Brindisi, Silverbacks, hockey: 5 fun things this weekend

Worcester’s alive! Here are our picks

Worcester’s never short on things to do. Each week, the Worcester Guardian highlights events and activities you may want to consider over the weekend ahead.

Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:

  1. The Silverbacks sliver into Greendale’s (before a long slumber?): For down-and-dirty blues and soul-tinged rock ‘n’ roll, it doesn’t get much better than the Silverbacks (and no, there is no apostrophe in the name!) around here. Saturday, Dec. 23, at Greendale’s Pub on West Boylston Street may be the last time you can see them, at least for a while, legendary guitarist Cliff Goodwin told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette’s Craig Semon. The group, which also features the equally-legendary Mike Lynch (vocals), Glenn DiTomasso (bass), Billy MacGillivray (drums), Jim Perry (guitar) and Deric Dyer (sax), is taking a break to “do other things” after the Christmas Eve eve show, which starts at 8 p.m. and costs $10 bucks at the door.
  2. Get your drum on: It’s time to get purposely percussive with the December WooDrum gathering at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Holden Street in Worcester on Friday, Dec. 22. This freestyle drumming circle is open to all, a space for all kinds of rhythms to unfold. Beginners are welcome. Bring drums or borrow drums (bring extras if you have them). There’s a suggested $5 donation at the door, and the event is 7-9 p.m.
  3. Worcester hockey at home: Ever go to a Worcester Railers game? It’s a good time, whether you’re a hockey head or not. This weekend, there are two games to choose from at the DCU Center. On Friday, Dec. 22, the Railers take on Trois-Rivières Lions and on Saturday, Dec. 23, it’s a battle with the Maine Mariners. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the puck drops at 5:05 p.m. for both games. With tickets starting at $15, this one’s got family value appeal.
  4. Skating on the common: Create your own holiday movie scene by strapping on a pair of ice skates and hitting the rink at the Worcester Common oval downtown. On the weekends, the ice is open on Fridays from 5-9 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 1-6 p.m. During school vacation, there are also weekday hours and extended weekend hours. Skate rental is $5. Tip: bring a Thermos of hot chocolate and wear a festive scarf.
  5. Cara Brindisi concert: a Winter Solstice Celebration: Among our local stars is Brindisi, who earned notoriety on “The Voice” and has long been a “must see” artist around here. She’s back for this second annual concert at Mechanic’s Hall on Thursday, Dec. 21. Join Brindisi and special guests for an evening of light and warmth on the longest night of the year. There may be a few tickets left. Nab them.
