WORCESTER—The Worcester Guardian made its confident yet subtle debut at the close of September. It was an honor, and exciting, to assume the role of the inaugural editor for this nonprofit news organization. And, with the guidance of our consultant, seasoned journalist Dave Nordman, we seamlessly integrated into the Worcester media landscape.
Equipped with a talented team of contributors and reporters, notably led by Kiernan Dunlop, our aim was to construct a robust foundation for this new free, nonprofit, and independent news source. Our mission: to offer a dynamic, hyperlocal platform narrating the Central Massachusetts story and addressing crucial issues affecting Worcester and its surrounding region.
Now, three months into our journey, we have established a formidable presence in the city and are steadily expanding. We’ve consistently delivered coverage of local politics, including thorough reporting on city hall and the school committee. Our scope extends to arts and entertainment, neighborhood concerns, business development, sports (plenty of sports!), animals, the environment, real estate, education, transportation, health, and myriad hyperlocal issues.
Some highlights from the stories we’ve covered during our initial three-month rollout:
- Rules for street vendors discussed by city council
- WRTA navigates providing services to newly-arrived migrants
- Worcester Airport: leisure travel taking off
- Worcester starts process for new Burncoat High School
- Community preservation surcharge anticipated to raise $4.4M
- Worcester emergency winter shelter at former RMV
- Turnout, Petty and Binienda: 5 takeaways from the city election
- Former Irish Times, not open in years, may lose liquor license
- Beyond Wrestling: ‘nothing that can replicate it’
- A city that responds (or doesn’t): Study on community queries
- Hallmark Christmas movie ‘Letters to Santa’ filmed in Worcester
- With Holy Cross FB coach leaving, will he take success with him?
- Sold! WooSox now among Diamond Baseball Holdings’ holdings
- Worcester Magazine ends free distribution; ‘move was inevitable’
Alright, you’ve got the gist. The list provided earlier is just a glimpse; it’s not an exhaustive catalog, but it conveys the essence. Our coverage spans every facet of our vibrant and evolving city. As we step into 2024, our plan is to enlist more reporters, broaden our coverage, and further immerse ourselves in the media landscape.
Now, we turn to you. What resolutions do you have for the City of Worcester? What areas would you like to see more comprehensive coverage on? What issues do you perceive as the most pressing today? We’re eager to hear from you, whether you share your thoughts in the comments or message us at carsenault@theworcesterguardian.org.
