WORCESTER—Tuesday’s City Council meeting was abruptly halted amid intense protests over the Israel-Palestine conflict, prompting councilors to vote to delay all agenda items until next week’s session.
The meeting, marked by multiple interruptions from protesters holding signs and voicing their concerns about the situation in Gaza, initially went into a brief recess before councilors ultimately voted to adjourn.
“It’s become obvious that we’re not going to be able to do any work this evening,” Councilor George Russell said, suggesting that all agenda items be held until the next meeting.
The decision to adjourn highlighted tensions between council leadership and protesters, with Councilor-at-Large Thu Nguyen expressing strong opposition over how the meeting was handled.
“I do not believe that this ruling was correct in silencing our folks here,” Nguyen said. “As we talk about the adjournment, we have to talk about our constituents who are all here demanding a ceasefire.”
Mayor Joe Petty attempted to explain the procedural constraints facing the council. “There’s not an item on the agenda, so therefore it’s against the open meeting law to discuss this in public,” he said, while acknowledging the emotional weight of the situation. “Nobody likes what’s going on in the Middle East and the loss of life. I do care about you.”
Petty presented two options to address the disruption: “We can continue the meeting out of order or we can adjourn the meeting.”
“We cannot continue business as usual during a genocide of Palestinian folks and people in Gaza,” Nguyen responded. “This adjournment and business as usual model did not have to happen.”
Protesters were informed they could request a suspension of rules at the next meeting to formally present their concerns to the city council, according to Clerk Nikolin Vangjeli.
The meeting’s early conclusion means all agenda items, including scheduled business matters, will be carried over to next week’s city council session.
