Clamdigging, contra, dam walks, poetry: 5 fun things this weekend

Worcester county has a big box of goodies to open this weekend. The Worcester Guardian highlights some events you may want to consider attending over the weekend

Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:

  1. Dance, all contra-like: Organizers claim it’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on. On Saturday, May 11, try out this “wicked fun” style of dancing led by caller Rich Sbardella and with live music by Mickey Koth on fiddle and John Kalinowski on accordion, an energetic and exuberant contra dance and concert duo with roots in Irish, Scottish, French-Canadian, jazz, and classical music. Their original arrangements of New England and Celtic reels, jigs, hornpipes, and waltzes delight and surprise listeners and dancers alike. The contra dance takes place at Wesley United Methodist Church, 114 Main St. Admission is $10-$12 individual, $6-$8 students and $25 families (suggested).
  2. Digging clams at Greendale’s: Keyboardist Jody Ryan’s joining the guys in Clamdigger for a show at Greendale’s on Friday, May 10. The band starts churning out its fine mix of classic rock tunes at 8:30 p.m.
  3. Dam it! The Buffumville Dam tours are back. Located in Charlton, these tours are led by a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park ranger, and guides visitors all around the property while explaining the history of the dam, the flood risk management mission and the Buffumville Lake project’s recreation options. It’s free. Wear good walking shoes and meet at 10 a.m. at the gate house doors on Saturday, May 11.
  4. Joyfully SOAR! On Sunday, May 12, enjoy the Worcester Children’s Chorus to celebrate the hard work of these singers with a joyful spring concert at Trinity Lutheran Church. The show starts at 3 p.m. Tickets prices are $20 adults, $15 seniors, $10 ages 13-26, $5 ages 6-12, free for kids 5 and younger.
  5. Worcester County Poetry Association presents Poet-pourri3: On Thursday, May 9, from 6:30-9 p.m. enjoy local poets, storytellers and humorist Joe Fusco, Jr. reading from their latest musings. The evening, which takes place at the WCPA Boardroom, 61 Harvard St., Worcester, is free and features along with Fusco: Cheryl Bonin, Tarique Cooper, Laura DiCaronimo, Oliver de la Paz, Judy Ferrara, Joe Fusco Jr., Carolyn Oliver, Robert Eugene Perry, and Xaulanda Thorpe.
