Elvis, violets, book day, Latin American expo: 5 weekend things

Worcester county has a good mix of stuff going on, especially this week. The Worcester Guardian highlights some events you may want to consider attending over the weekend

Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:

  1. Independent bookstore day: There’s a day for everything nowadays, so why not a day for independent bookstores? Well, that day is being celebrated by Annie’s Book Stop on James Street Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. This day, which celebrates these unique, independent stores across the country, is being celebrated at Annie’s with flash sales throughout the day on new and pre-read titles, vintage books, Doctor Who merchandise and more. Over at Tidepool Bookshop, also on Saturday, there’s an author signing with Children’s author Andrew Hacket at noon. Hacket’s written such kids’ books as “Hope and the Sea,” “Curlilocks and the Three Hares,” and “Ollie, the Acorn and the Mighty Idea.” Read the Worcester Guardian’s recent piece on Worcester’s independent bookstores.
  2. Annual Latin American Business Expo: This business event for small and minority-owned businesses in Central Massachusetts takes place on Saturday, April 27, from noon to 4 p.m. at the DCU Center. This year’s theme, “Launch, Grow and Thrive,” emphasizes the journey of starting and developing a business by highlighting the importance of successfully launching and then building upon that foundation to grow and thrive in the market. A diverse crowd of more than 1,000 attendees is expected to the expo, which is a wonderful way to network, showcase or learn about local products, and purchase products and services directly from the exhibitors. Admission is free.
  3. Take some shots of Whiskey Church: This popular cover band headlines Rascals on James Street Saturday, April 27. Featuring singer Chip Zale, guitarists Jed Weeks and Rob Keeler, bassist Chris Hill and drummer Kevin “Bam Bam” Gallagher, the band plays a mix of classic rock on the heavier side of town; think Aerosmith, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses and Led Zeppelin.
  4. Viva Las Elvis: From Sun to Vegas: Frontman “Elvis” Dan Fontaine leads Viva Las Elvis, formerly Fellowship of the King, which features the Memphis Sun Mafia Band, in this premier show that pays tribute to the King of rock ‘n’ roll. This weekend, the show rolls into Off the Rails on Friday, April 26.
  5. You’re turning violet, Violet! The popular house plant African violet is being celebrated in all its glory this weekend at the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill in West Boylston on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the Bay State African Violet Society Show and Sale. The event features horticultural and design exhibits of African violets grown by Bay State African Violet Society members, lectures and demos. Plus, there will be hundreds of these beauties for sale at the event.
