SHREWSBURY—Nearly a week after Kevin Doherty was shot and killed near Jordan Pond, his fiancée has spoken publicly about the devastating loss.

On Aug. 28, Shrewsbury Police received a 911 call reporting an altercation on a pathway by the pond, according to Shrewsbury Police Chief Kevin Anderson and Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. During the call, telecommunicators heard what appeared to be gunshots before the line went silent.

Police arrived to find Doherty gravely injured. He was transported to UMass Medical Center, where he later died.

Using drones, officers quickly located a suspect hiding in a nearby home. With assistance from the Massachusetts State Police STOP Team and Air Wing, the man surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody. He was arraigned the following day in Westborough District Court, authorities said.

In the days since the shooting, Doherty’s fiancée, Sarah Schofield, has shared the pain her family is enduring. In a statement sent to media, Schofield described Doherty as “the love of my life” and “the most amazing father” to their son and his two daughters.

“Kevin and I were set to be married on September 20th,” Schofield wrote. “No one should ever endure the trauma of canceling wedding arrangements only to make funeral ones. This loss, and the fractures it created are so severe it makes healing seem impossible.”

She recalled Doherty’s love of sports, especially golf, his hard work for his family, and the way he woke up each day with a smile. “He truly woke up each morning with a smile on his face,” she wrote. “Kevin lived his life with purpose and found joy in all things.”

Schofield also thanked the community for the support shown to her and her family in the days since the shooting. “The immediate support and compassion you all have shown to me and my family during this time is profound. I am overwhelmed by your generosity. I feel so blessed to be raising my son in a place that comes together for one another in times of need.”

The family has asked for privacy as they grieve and said they do not intend to make any further statements that could affect the ongoing case.
