WORCESTER— They’re used to putting out fires—but for one night in August, Worcester’s bravest will be firing up the grill instead.
The Paragus Firehouse Cook-Off returns to Polar Park on Tuesday, Aug. 12, when ten Worcester firehouses go spatula-to-spatula in a friendly, food-fueled competition.
The annual event draws hundreds of guests for one night of community, culinary flair, and remembrance while raising funds for two local causes close to the Worcester Fire Department’s heart: DetecTogether and the WFD6K Memorial Foundation.
“It’s more than just a cook-off,” said retired Worcester firefighter John Franco, who organizes the event and chairs the WFD6K. “It’s a way for the department and the community to come together, reflect on those we’ve lost, and give back to causes that make a real difference.”
Last year, the event raised $20,000 for local charities supporting mental health, cancer detection, and service dogs for veterans. The money helps sustain programs like DetecTogether’s free skin cancer screenings for firefighters, which Franco has personally benefited from. “Supporting DetecTogether and bringing these two meaningful events together is both a natural partnership and a profound way to advance our shared mission,” he said.

The culinary competition is fierce but friendly, with teams prepping high-quality meals that go far beyond chili or burgers. “Many firefighters learn to cook on the job,” Franco noted. “The dishes reflect the creativity and pride developed in the firehouse kitchen.”
Each team chooses its own dish, and every year’s menu is a surprise. Attendees cast votes for the People’s Choice Award, while a rotating panel of judges names the Best Meal. Friendly rivalries abound, and there’s even a recurring team of retired firefighters who call themselves the “Grumpy Old Jakes.”
Between wrangling teams, prepping food for 300+ attendees, and keeping spirits high, it’s a huge logistical effort—but one Franco says is always worth it. “The dedication and enthusiasm of our teams make it all worthwhile.”
The night kicks off with the Worcester Fire Department Pipes and Drums and includes face painting, family fun, and lots of bragging rights. Community members who can’t attend can still help out: “We’re always looking for donations and sponsors,” Franco said. “Reach out if you want to support.”

And yes—Denis Leary, if you’re reading this, there’s a judge’s seat with your name on it.
The 2025 Paragus Firehouse Cook-Off takes place Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 5–9 p.m. at Polar Park.
