Worcester’s never short on events and activities to choose from, from an open mic to a comedy show performed by teachers to a Grateful Dead tribute. Each week, the Worcester Guardian highlights some stuff you may want to consider over the weekend ahead
Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:
- Bring a song or poem to perform: Did you know Union Music hosts an open mic the first Saturday of each month? It’s true. That means there’s an open mic, hosted by Mark Robie, on Saturday, March 2, from 1-3 p.m. Bring a song or composition down to share.
- Funny teachers on tour: Teachers can be pretty darned funny sometimes. Even comedians. Bored Teachers Studios brings its “The Bored Teachers: We Can’t Make This Stuff Up” tour to the Hanover Theatre for the second of two shows on Friday, March 1, featuring a lineup of comedians who are teachers in “real life.”
- Calling all Deadheads: Fennario is returning to what it calls “home base” on Saturday, March 2, with a show at Electric Haze. The band grooves and slides and bounces through lots of Grateful Dead high-energy jams. Doors open at 8 p.m. Patchouli and tie dye is optional.
- Eat the spaghetti, keep the plate: The Worcester Center for Crafts has been holding this delectable event for years, and it’s coming around again on Saturday, March 2, from 5:30-8 p.m. It’s a night filled with food (a catered pasta dinner), ceramic wonders and fun. Plus, you can pick a plate that was made right there in the studio to take home.
- The real deal Irish Festival: These folks do it right. For the 40th year, Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Worcester, with help from the Worcester Hiberian Cultural Centre, is hosting its Irish Festival. From 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., enjoy music, food, vendors, novelties and more. The lineup includes performances by the Colonial Pipers Bagpipe Band, Murphy Academy of Irish Dance, Belfast Cowboys, Police Pipes & Drums of Worcester, McInerney School of Irish Dance, and the Brennan Brothers. Corned beef sandwiches, hot dogs, chips and other foodstuffs are available for sale, too.
