Charlotte Sonntag’s hockey career is heading overseas.
The Holy Cross women’s ice hockey standout has signed her first professional contract with Modo Hockey, a club in the Swedish Women’s Hockey League (SDHL), the top level of women’s hockey in Sweden, according to a Holy Cross athletics announcement.
The signing marks the next step for one of the Crusaders’ most accomplished forwards in the Hockey East era. Sonntag, a member of the Class of 2026 from Sun Valley, Idaho, appeared in all 35 games during her senior season, finishing sixth on the team in scoring with 11 goals and seven assists for 18 points.
Over four seasons, Sonntag totaled 21 goals and 18 assists for 39 career points. She finished her Holy Cross career ranked third in goals, seventh in points and ninth in assists among Crusaders players during the Hockey East era, according to the athletics department.
Sonntag also etched her name into the program’s record book in 2024 when she became the first Holy Cross player in the Hockey East era to record a hat trick, scoring three goals in a 6-0 victory over Assumption. She earned Hockey East Player of the Week honors following that performance and was a three-time Hockey East All-Academic Team selection during her collegiate career.
Modo Hockey, based in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, is one of the country’s most recognizable hockey organizations, competing in the SDHL while also operating one of Europe’s most respected player development programs.
Sonntag now joins a growing list of Holy Cross athletes who have extended their careers into the professional ranks, taking the next step in one of the world’s premier women’s hockey leagues.
