You could spend this weekend traveling from India to Key West to the golden age of American song without straying very far from Worcester.
Or keep things firmly rooted in the city with a 10th anniversary basketball celebration at Crompton Park and a benefit concert featuring musicians whose ties to the local scene stretch back decades. Whatever direction you choose, there’s plenty happening around town.
Here are five picks for the weekend:
- Old friends, good music, worthy cause: Decades of Central Massachusetts music history come together for one night when Who Wants to Know takes over the FrontRoom at WCUW on Saturday, Aug. 8. Arny Spielberg, Bob Sarkala, Gerry Bellegarde and Doug MacLeod serve up what they call a “mixed-up gumbo” of R&B, Americana, country and blues, drawing on musical partnerships that stretch back decades. Worcester music veteran Ric Porter opens the show with original songs, joined by Spielberg and Sarkala, and may stick around for some musical cross-pollination later in the night. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with music at 7, at WCUW, 910 Main St. A minimum $20 donation is suggested, with proceeds benefiting the community radio station. Light refreshments served, or guests can bring their own.
- A passport to India: Spend Saturday immersed in the sights, sounds and flavors of India as the India Society of Worcester brings India Day 2026 to the DCU Center on Aug. 8 from noon to 7 p.m. The free, family-friendly celebration features more than 30 dance, drama and musical performances, along with authentic Indian food, art and cultural displays and more than 40 shopping and community exhibitors. Visitors can also take advantage of free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings and hands-on CPR and Stop the Bleed training. Admission is free, with $9 event parking available at the Major Taylor Boulevard Municipal Garage.
- Wastin’ away again on Lake Quinsigamond: Break out the Hawaiian shirts and start looking for that lost shaker of salt when the Island Castaways Band brings a little Key West to the Worcester MCL on Sunday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. The Southern Worcester County band has spent 15 years playing its mix of original tropical rock and Jimmy Buffett-inspired favorites everywhere from Fenway Park to Parrot Head gatherings in Key West. This time, they’re on the stage at the waterfront of 181 Lake Ave., a fitting backdrop for an afternoon of laid-back tunes, dancing and island escapism.
- Ten years of hoops, hometown pride and Summer Jam: Crompton Park becomes the center of Worcester’s basketball universe on Saturday, Aug. 8, as the Worcester Summer Jam Classic celebrates its 10th annual tournament. Launched in 2016, the free community event combines serious competition with a full day of neighborhood fun, including a pro-am tournament, boys and girls high school showcases and an elite lineup featuring college, professional and high school players. Off the court, expect music, live entertainment, local food and vendors, kids’ activities, face painting, a bouncy house and back-to-school supply giveaways. More than a basketball tournament, Summer Jam was created to bring Worcester together around a message of community, peace and solidarity—and a decade later, the game is still going strong.
- The greatest concert that never happened: What if Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland had shared the stage for an entire concert? That tantalizing bit of musical make-believe comes to life in Sinatra & Garland: The Concert That Could Have Been on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 2-4 p.m. at the JMAC, 20B Franklin St. Created by Michael Pizzi, the show pairs him with Broadway powerhouse Lucia Spina and music director John Fischer for a 90-minute-plus trip through the legends’ songbooks, including “The Lady Is a Tramp,” “Zing Went the Strings of My Heart,” “New York, New York,” “The Trolley Song,” “Chicago” and, naturally, the Garland classic you know is coming. Spina’s Broadway credits include “Into the Woods,” “The Bridges of Madison County” and “Les Misérables.” General admission tickets are $86, with 10% of net profits benefiting local food banks.
