WORCESTER—Molly McGovern, the daughter of Congressman Jim McGovern, has died unexpectedly while visiting friends in Italy, her family announced in a statement released this morning. She was the daughter of Congressman McGovern, his wife Lisa McGovern, and sister to Patrick McGovern.
“Molly radiated pure joy,” the McGovern family shared in their statement. “She lit up every room with her beaming smile—full of laughter, endless warmth, and a sharp wit that could disarm you in an instant.”
The family described Molly as fiercely loyal, deeply compassionate, and someone who made fast friends wherever she went. “She treated people with compassion and kindness—always standing up for the underdog,” the statement read.
A devoted Boston Bruins fan and a passionate traveler, Molly had recently completed a semester abroad in Australia and was visiting a friend and his family in Italy at the time of her passing. She had been living with a rare cancer diagnosis, which she faced “with relentless courage, optimism, and tenacity,” according to her family.
“Molly will always be the soul of our family,” they wrote. “We are so proud of her, and so glad that so many people were touched by her incredible life.”
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey offered condolences in a separate statement, saying, “I’m heartbroken for the McGovern family over the passing of their beloved Molly. Molly was a light in her family’s lives and the lives of so many. She was a kind, smart and compassionate young woman who touched the lives of many.”
Healey added that she and her partner Joanna Lydgate were “sending all our love and support to Congressman McGovern, Lisa, Patrick and all of their loved ones during this difficult time.”
Congressman McGovern has represented Massachusetts’s 2nd Congressional District since 1997 and has long been recognized for his advocacy on issues of hunger and human rights. A Worcester native who grew up in the Burncoat area, he is often regarded not just for his public service but also for his deep connection to his community and family.
