A man reported missing in Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday afternoon was found dead Monday morning after an extensive search involving multiple public safety agencies from across Central Massachusetts.
According to the Shrewsbury Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 3:27 p.m. Sunday after receiving a 911 call reporting that a man was possibly drowning in the area of Sunset Beach.
Shrewsbury police officers responded on land and aboard the department’s patrol boat, joined by the Shrewsbury Fire Department and Worcester EMS. Despite an extensive search throughout the afternoon and evening, crews were unable to locate the man Sunday.
The search resumed Monday morning in the area of Sunset Beach.
Police said the victim was located beneath the water during the late morning hours using sonar technology and dive teams. He was pronounced dead shortly after being recovered.
The search drew assistance from numerous agencies, including Worcester Police, the Worcester Fire District 7 Dive Team, District 14 Dive Team, Holden Fire Department, the Massachusetts State Police Dive Team, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts Environmental Police, and the Berlin, Grafton and Westborough police departments.
In a statement, the Shrewsbury Police Department thanked the responding agencies for their assistance throughout the search and recovery effort.
“We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of the victim of this tragedy,” the department said in the announcement. “The Shrewsbury Police Department takes the safety of everyone who enjoys Lake Quinsigamond very seriously. Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones, and we remain committed to doing everything we can to promote water safety and protect those who live, work, and recreate on the lake.”
Authorities said the investigation remains active. The victim’s identity and additional details have not been released.
