WORCESTER — A report of a man with a gun led Worcester police to uncover explosive military-grade ammunition at a city residence Friday afternoon.
Officers responded around 1:15 p.m. on July 12 to the area of Monroe Ave. after receiving a report that someone had a firearm.
They found a man seated outside with a handgun nearby. According to police, the man appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis. He was detained and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police said the man did not have a license to carry firearms. After obtaining a warrant to search the residence, officers discovered several 40 mm grenade launcher rounds containing explosive materials — munitions designed for military use.
The discovery prompted officers to evacuate and request assistance from the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad. The items were safely transported and later rendered safe by MSP, police said.
The man has been issued a summons for weapons-related charges. Worcester police say reports are still being compiled.
This is a developing story. The Worcester Guardian will provide updates as more information becomes available.
