WORCESTER—There are a whole lot of fun events going on in Worcester, all the time. Each week, the Worcester Guardian highlights events and activities you may want to consider over the weekend that is upon you.
Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:
- A little bit o’ soul, and other dancey grooves: Blackstone Soul, a six-piece, high-energy party band specializing in funk, soul, disco, R&B, yacht rock and dance hits from the throwbacks through today, returns to the MCL Club on Lake Ave. on Saturday, Dec. 16. With an in-the-pocket rhythm section, killer sax and commanding female and male lead vocals, this band is a wise choice to catch for a night out. The cover is $5.
- Concert for a Claus is back: It’s Santapalooza, part 11, returning to the White Eagle on Green Street on Saturday, Dec. 16. The annual event assists the Marines’ Toys for Tots Foundation in giving Worcester County families and children a memorable holiday. Bands this year include Molly Jane-Gane and Joe Anderson, The McCrites, Ripple Effect, Electric Flannel, Candy Criminals and Flock of Assholes. Plus, there are raffles, photos with Santa, ugly sweater contest and a 50/50 raffle. Bring a new, unopened toy worth at least $10 bucks, or donate $10 bucks at the door. Festivities start at 5 p.m. and go to 11 p.m. (“this one goes to 11!).
- Bah Humbug: The classic “A Christmas Carol” returns to Hanover Theater, opening Dec. 16 and continuing with several performances through Dec. 23. This adaptation by Hanover president and CEO Troy Siebels features the Wurlizer organ, and fills the stage with timeless music, lavish costumes and special effects. New and returning cast members tell the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by those pesky spirits. Go here for more information and tickets.
- Winter at WAM: Besides its renowned collection of art collections, the Worcester art Museum is home to many cultural events, including music. On Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. Neighborhood Strings (Arianna Falk on cello and Peter Sulski on viola) joins the Worcester Chamber Music Society for a free program for all ages.
- Annual holiday church concert: The Worcester Chorus Women’s Ensemble returns to Trinity Lutheran Church to perform their annual holiday concert on Sunday, Dec. 17, at 4 p.m. The program, directed by Worcester Chorus Associate Director Mark Mummert, features Benjamin Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols” and a selection of Christmas classics and holiday sing-alongs. Check out the full program and get tickets.
