Shelter show, Bee Gees, swordplay, open house: 5 weekend things

The Worcester Guardian highlights events you may want to consider hitting up this weekend

Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:

  1. More Bee Gees, less budget: Break out the bell bottoms—Stayin’ Alive, the ultimate Bee Gees tribute band, is bringing all the falsetto and funk you can handle to the Hanover Theatre this Saturday, May 10. Expect a full night of disco hits like “Night Fever,” “Jive Talkin’,” and, of course, “Stayin’ Alive,” plus a few soul-stirrers like “To Love Somebody” and “I Started a Joke.” With big screen visuals and full-throttle energy, this isn’t just a tribute—it’s a time machine.
  2. Do-si-don’t miss this dance party: Grab some (clean) dancing shoes and head to Wesley UMC’s gym for Worcester Contra Dance this Saturday, May 10, from 7:30-10:30 p.m. (Beginner intro at 7:15 p.m.). With live tunes from Wild Notes and caller Steve Holland guiding the way, no partner—or experience—is needed to have a wicked good time. Expect high-energy reels, lots of laughs, and a community vibe that’s as joyful as the music. Admission is $10–$12 ($6–$8 for students), and snacks are welcome.
  3. Welcome home, Steve (whoever you are) — with Fleetwood vibes and furry friends: This Sunday, May 11, from 3:30–7 p.m., Electric Haze throws a party for someone named Steve (we don’t know him either, but hey, we’re all in) with a Fleetwood Mac tribute show by Little Lies. Expect all the hits—”Rhiannon,” “Don’t Stop,” “Dreams,” “Gypsy,” “Go Your Own Way”—plus good eats from a food truck, and good feels from supporting Baypath Humane Society.
  4. Art, gifts, and open doors at the Hunchback: Hunchback Gallery at 75 Webster Street is throwing open its doors this Saturday, May 10, from noon to 6 p.m. for its monthly open studios—where the public is invited to browse, buy, and hang with some of Worcester’s most creative minds. The current exhibit is on display, and local art collective Punkcake slings one-of-a-kind goods alongside a crew of artists with studios in the building. Meet and mingle with Tim Doyle, Abu Mweyne, Matthew Burgos, and Travis Duda, who’ll have their spaces open and stocked with art and gift-worthy finds. Free parking’s across the street, curiosity is encouraged, and surprises are likely.
  5. Slice of history: swordplay at the WAM: Step aside, action movies—real sword fighting is taking the spotlight this Sunday, May 11, from 2-2:30 p.m. at the Worcester Art Museum. This live demonstration brings historical swordplay to life, with experts showing off how rapiers and broadswords were actually wielded in centuries past. Get a chance to lift a reproduction weapon—turns out, they’re heavier than they look. The demo is included with museum admission, and programming is subject to change (unless someone draws steel, of course). Go for the show, stay and check out some art.
