LOWELL – The South High girls basketball team made it back to the state championship game but fell, 62-20, to Medfield in the Division 2 final at the Tsongas Center on Saturday.
The sixth-seeded Colonels (19-5) struggled offensively all game and committed more than 20 turnovers which allowed top-seeded Medfield (23-2) to capture its second straight state title. The Warriors beat South, 48-42, in the 2024 final.
“I felt we didn’t have the energy and we didn’t want it and you can’t win like that,” South coach Diago McClain said.

The outsized Colonels had no answer for the inside play of junior Izzy Kittredge who led all scorers with a game-high 28 points. Junior Tess Baacke and freshman Abby Broderick each chipped in with 10 points apiece for Medfield.
Senior Bryan Bascones and junior Ava MacCollom led South with six points apiece.
The 20 points was a season-low for the Colonels, who were held to just one point in the fourth quarter. After trailing 19-13 at halftime, South was outscored 28-6 in the third quarter and 43-7 overall in the second half.
“I just think we didn’t execute. We looked scared at moments and we didn’t run our offense,” added McClain. “You can’t take plays off against a team like that.”
Despite the loss, the Colonels have 10 returning players on the roster for next season.
