The Department of Public Works began residential street sweeping April 6, weather permitting, according to a city announcement.

The work rolls through neighborhoods based on trash collection schedules, beginning in areas with Friday pickup and continuing through Thursday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday collection zones.

Residential streets are swept from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, while arterial roads are cleaned overnight from 11:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. on weekdays, according to the announcement.

Parking bans are in effect during scheduled sweeping, and vehicles that interfere with the process may be ticketed or towed. The city noted that a $50 fine applies to vehicles that are not removed.

Officials also reminded residents that street sweepers cannot pick up brush, branches, or yard waste. Those materials must be taken to municipal yard waste drop-off sites, and violators may face fines, according to the announcement.

Residents and business owners can assist by sweeping sand and debris from sidewalks into the gutter before crews arrive and by clearing debris in front of walkways, vacant lots, and medians, the city said.

Residential street sweeping is expected to take six to eight weeks to complete. Neighborhood maps and anticipated dates are available on the city’s website, and updates will also be posted through Worcester 311 social media and ALERTWorcester notifications, according to the announcement.

Officials noted that the schedule is subject to change based on weather and other conditions.
