UPTON –A teenager has been extradited to the United States and will be arraigned on charges related to a fatal 2022 crash in Upton, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.
Gabriel Dias De Holanda, 19, faces charges of manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in the crash that took place on Aug. 6, 2022.
That evening, Upton police, fire and EMS responded to a single-car crash on Glenview Way, where they found an overturned car and front-seat passenger Jacob O. Osanyawas trapped inside. Emergency responders pulled Osanya from the vehicle and transported him to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester where he was pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries.
All five occupants of the vehicle, including Dias De Holanda, who was driving, suffered injuries in the crash and all were transported to UMass for treatment.
Authorities found that two days after the crash, Dias De Holanda, who had been living with his family in Bellingham, left the country for Brazil, which does not extradite its nationals.
In December 2023, Massachusetts State Police detectives learned that Dias De Holanda was traveling to the United Kingdom, and UK authorities arrested Dias De Holanda in London on Dec. 22, 2023.
After the United States requested extradition, Dias De Holanda consented to an extradition hearing in London on Feb. 22, 2024, and the UK subsequently ordered it.
On Friday, May 3, Dias De Holanda was escorted back to the United States by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Dias De Holanda is expected to be arraigned in Milford District Court on Monday, May 6.
