It’s getting colder, and dark early, but that doesn’t limit the options of fun and interesting stuff to do. Each Thursday, the Worcester Guardian highlights events and activities you may want to consider over the weekend.
Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:
- Veterans Day pancakes followed by a parade: Even if you only eat griddle hoppers once a year (highly unlikely!), this is the time to do it. Veterans Inc. is hosting its annual Veterans Day Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 8:30-11 a.m. at its headquarters—69 Grove St., Worcester. While it’s called a “pancake breakfast,” other morning meal foods such as eggs, home fries, sausages, coffee, tea and juices, are on the table, too. Also, the event includes a “patriotic children’s corner” with crafts, arts and other family activities. The annual Worcester Veterans Parade follows, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Bean Counter on North Street, following the route ending at Lincoln Square at the WWI Memorial, where a ceremony is held that includes wreath laying and the Color Guard performance. Here’s the parade route and info.
- Rock and roll is on at Off the Rails: He’s often referred to as “Worcester’s queer rock ‘n’ roll sensation.” He’s a sensation, queer or otherwise. Influenced heavily by storyteller, folk-ish rockers such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, the stage-ready Giuliano and his group The Band Plays Loud are celebrating the one-year anniversary of Giuliano’s record release with a show at Off the Rails on Saturday, Nov. 11. This special all-ages show starts at 7 p.m. with openers Colt & the Coyotes. Tickets are $20.
- If you like the classics, this is one of the best cover bands around: While the name may imply that it’s a Beatles tribute, it’s not. Dr. Robert does knock out some of the Fab Four (maybe the new one this time around?), but this quartet of veteran musicians delivers setlists that touch on the cornerstones of classic rock—even some obscure numbers. Dr. Robert returns to one of its favorite stomping grounds, Greendale’s, on Saturday, Nov. 11. Show starts at 8:30 p.m.
- It’s a harvest, but it ain’t apples or corn: Dozens of “farmers” in New England compete for the Harvest Cup at the DCU Center on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 11 and 12. This two-day cannabis competition and expo has been taking place in Worcester since 2017, and features hundreds of vendors, artists, live podcasts and the big reveal of all the winners in a number of categories. - Decade of excess makes for great trivia: MTV! Pac-Man! Reaganomics! Test your knowledge on ‘80s trivia Thursday, Nov. 9, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Redemption Rock Brewing. Field questions on music, TV, movies, shows, video games, news, sports and more to win gift cards and ‘80s-inspired prizes. Redemption Rock keeps the ‘80s theme going with a party that involves BBQ on Friday, Nov. 10. Oh, and there’s good beer on tap.
