WORCESTER—A new school year officially began in Worcester on Aug. 25 as students returned to classrooms, eager for the adventures ahead. Worcester became one of the first districts in the Commonwealth to start its new session, with Heard Street Discovery Academy taking center stage as teachers welcomed students with a red-carpet entrance.

School district and city leaders joined in the celebration as roughly 300 students at the neighborhood school reunited after summer break. Principal Cynthia Vail said the day is a highlight for both students and educators as they look forward to new beginnings and opportunities to grow.

“We know summer is over, but we’re still excited to welcome the kids and be here. Our teachers have been working relentlessly for weeks to welcome them in,” said Vail. “Every year we roll out a red carpet. We have our teachers here who come out and talk to parents, ask any questions families might have. We try to make it as exciting as we can for the students.”

As students filed in, greeting old friends and new, many were already looking forward to the year. Second grader Cora Bartelloni said she was especially excited to return to her favorite subject, art.

“It feels good,” Bartelloni said. “I like art. We get to draw. I like when we get to do zigzags and scrunch it together into a little caterpillar.”

For some families, the day also carried on traditions. Leah Chase, whose children Haylee and Vinny were among the first to arrive, noted that her husband attended Heard Street, and her children are proud to continue that legacy.

“They’re excited to go back and see their friends,” Chase said. “Just getting back to learning new things.”

The school year also marks the first under Superintendent Brian Allen, promoted over the summer. He greeted parents with optimism, acknowledging both the excitement and the anxieties families may feel as a new year begins.

“Seeing the kids arrive and the year we have ahead, it’s just a great day,” said Allen. “We welcome the staff back and we want to just stay the course. We’re seeing great progress so we’re just going to let the teachers do what they do best, which is teaching in the classrooms. And for the students we just assure them that they are welcome. There’s a sense of belonging here and they’re safe in our buildings.”

Mayor Joseph Petty echoed the superintendent’s remarks, calling Worcester one of the safest school districts. While he fielded questions on broader issues like immigration, education funding, and school security, he kept the focus on the joy of the day.

“We’ve been preparing for this since the end of the school year. The teachers are pretty excited to come back,” Petty said. “We’ve worked hard to get the infrastructure in place in the City of Worcester. Our new Superintendent Brian Allen has come on board and is going to stick with our master plan and making sure we improve on that – it’s working. We still have some challenges, but we’re going to be working hard. It’s good to have an atmosphere where the teachers are happy and they’re really excited to be back.”

The morning ended with students striking poses on the red carpet, capturing first-day photos to remember for years to come. Kindergarten and Pre-K students will officially begin their school year on Thursday.
