Worcester mark Memorial Day weekend with a series of ceremonies honoring military service members who died while serving in the armed forces. The Worcester Veterans’ Council and the city’s Division of Veterans Services hosts events Sunday, May 24, and Monday, May 25, at locations across the city, continuing longstanding local traditions of remembrance ahead of the national holiday.

The observances begin Sunday at 1 p.m. with the annual Water Ceremony at Elm Park, 138 Russell St., a tribute to Worcester service members lost at sea. During the ceremony, veterans and participants gather near the park pond and place wreaths and flowers into the water in memory of the fallen.

Monday’s events begin with the city’s official Memorial Day Observance and Remembrance Ceremony at 9 a.m. at Hope Cemetery, 119 Webster St.

Additional wreath-laying ceremonies are scheduled later in the day at two Worcester veterans memorials.

At 11 a.m., veterans and city officials will gather at the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Green Hill Park, 50 Officer Manny Familia Way. A second wreath laying will follow at 1 p.m. at the Korean War Memorial, 52 Foster St.

The ceremonies are organized by the Worcester Veterans’ Council and the city’s Division of Veterans Services. All events are open to the public.
