WORCESTER—The city’s once again putting its snowplows in the hands of the people—well, the very small, very creative people.
The Department of Public Works and Worcester Public Schools have teamed up for the second annual “Name a Snowplow” contest, inviting local students to help christen four of the city’s winter workhorses for the 2025–2026 snow season.
WPS students in grades K–12 submit their most imaginative names through Nov. 26, after which the public votes on the winners. Each of the four chosen names will adorn a plow responsible for keeping one of the city’s major arterial routes clear when the flakes start flying.
“The Name a Snowplow Contest was such a hit last year we had to bring it back again to name four more trucks,” City Manager Eric D. Batista said in the city’s announcement. “This is a fun contest that highlights the creativity of our Worcester Public Schools students and the dedication of DPW members as they work hard to keep our streets clear and safe during the cold winter months.”
Last year’s inaugural contest produced instant classics like Scoop Dogg, Sleetwood Mac, William Scrapespeare and Snow More Mr. Ice Guy—names that managed to plow straight into Worcester’s collective heart.
“If last year’s contest was any indication, we are going to get some really creative names for city snow plows this year!” said WPS Superintendent Brian E. Allen. “Our students are highly creative, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with.”
The winning classrooms earns a visit and photo op with their freshly named truck, some DPW swag, and a bit of fame at a future City Council meeting.
For Worcester, it’s a lighthearted way to celebrate the coming chill—and a reminder that even a snowplow can have personality.
