WORCESTER—Last week, the city’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women (ACSW) honored recipients of the 2024 Woman and Young Woman of Consequence Awards, which centered around the theme “Trailblazing Through Mentorship,” the city announced.
Jermoh Kamara received the 2024 Woman of Consequence Award for her impactful leadership as the co-founder and president of the Massachusetts Organization of African Descendants (MOAD). Through MOAD, Kamara addresses systemic socioeconomic issues impacting the African community in Worcester. Kamara, too, served on the Worcester School Committee.
She also contributes to the Worcester Black Families Together board and was recently nominated to serve on the City of Worcester’s Advisory Commission on African American and Black Affairs. Kamara’s commitment to public health and school-based health initiatives, demonstrated through her work with the Hawah V. Kamara Children’s Foundation and the YWCA, showcases her dedication to community wellness.
Anahit Marutyan was awarded the 2024 Young Woman of Consequence Award. As a junior at Claremont Academy, Marutyan participates in the Early College Program and engages in impactful internships, including with the University of Southern California’s Shoah Foundation’s William Lauder Internship Program and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.
Marutyan’s advocacy extends to social media, where she co-created “Ourstrive4change” on Instagram, focusing on educating young people on racial/social justice issues and climate change. Her leadership roles within her school and community highlight her commitment to positive change.
The ACSW, established in 1977, continues to champion women’s issues in Worcester through advocacy, forums, and public awareness campaigns. Since 1996, the ACSW has celebrated remarkable women through the Women of Consequence Awards, recognizing their contributions to the community.
