WORCESTER—For the tenth consecutive year, the Worcester Housing Authority (WHA) has been named a “high performer” by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
This prestigious designation, released last month, follows WHA’s strong performance in HUD’s Public Housing Assessment System (PHAS), which evaluates housing authorities across four key areas: physical condition, financial management, operations, and capital fund use.
The WHA scored 90 out of 100, solidifying its reputation for delivering top-tier housing services. The assessment is considered a crucial indicator of an agency’s overall management and performance, and this consistent high ranking is a source of pride for the WHA, which manages more than 3,000 units across 26 sites and administers more than 4,000 rental vouchers.
“As a team, we are deeply committed to providing safe, affordable, and clean homes for our residents,” said WHA CEO Alex Corrales in a press release. “This ‘high performer’ status reflects our hard work and the pride our residents take in their community. It also speaks to the strong leadership of our Board of Commissioners, whose vision allows us to keep pushing boundaries as we strive to be the nation’s leading housing authority.”
The WHA earned perfect scores in two of the four PHAS categories – management and capital fund – and posted strong marks in the physical and financial areas. Corrales emphasized that these scores reflect the WHA’s dedication to high standards, noting that their properties undergo rigorous inspections and reviews at both state and federal levels.
“We take immense pride in meeting the highest standards daily,” Corrales added. “While we’re proud of what we’ve achieved, we’re always looking ahead. With several exciting projects in the works, our residents can expect even more improvements in the future. We’re grateful to HUD for recognizing our efforts, and we appreciate the support we receive from local, state, and federal partners.”
