WORCESTER—Assumption University’s Best Buddies chapter has been awarded the 2024 Outstanding Massachusetts College Chapter of the Year by Best Buddies of MA & RI, the college announced.

Best Buddies is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to positively impacting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through support, empowerment, and connection.

“This award means so much because it shows our team that our passion for this chapter and everyone involved is the driving force behind our success,” said Juliana Brien ’25, co-president of the Assumption chapter, in the announcement. “Nothing beats the smiles we see at our meetings and events, but this recognition validates that our efforts are making a difference.”

Co-President Cara Melchionne ’25 echoed Brien’s sentiments, stating in the press release, “Winning this award is a huge accomplishment that highlights the impact we’re making. However, the smiles, hugs, and lasting memories we create with our buddies are what truly matter.”

The chapter collaborates with local programs to foster inclusivity and bring together the Assumption and Worcester communities through various events and activities designed to help those with disabilities thrive.

Throughout the academic year, chapter also hosts a variety of events, including bi-weekly meetings, weekend gatherings, and a newly introduced Friendship Ball. The themed meetings often incorporate seasonal activities; for instance, this year’s St. Patrick’s Day meeting featured a themed scavenger hunt in the Kennedy Memorial Building.

In addition, the Assumption chapter partners with various athletic teams on campus and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), providing opportunities for members and their buddies to participate in events such as the annual “trunk-or-treat,” attending football practice, and even having a buddy sing the national anthem at a women’s basketball game.

“I know our chapter is making a difference,” said Brien in the announcement. “From the joy on the faces of our students and buddies to the feedback from parents about how happy their children are during our meetings, it’s clear that our work is fulfilling its purpose: helping buddies and students connect and thrive.”

Both Brien and Melchionne have been dedicated members of Assumption’s Best Buddies chapter since their freshman year and are excited to continue their roles as co-presidents in the 2024-2025 academic year.

Melchionne has been involved with Best Buddies since childhood, attending events with her older sister, Carmen, who has Down syndrome. However, she was disappointed when her high school lacked a Best Buddies chapter.

“When searching for colleges, Assumption’s Best Buddies chapter was a major draw for me,” Melchionne said in a press release. “I was eager to get involved immediately, planning events and working closely with the buddies. I can’t imagine my life at Assumption without Best Buddies.”

Brien became involved with the organization at Assumption, which has greatly enriched her college experience. “I absolutely fell in love with the program and knew I had to be part of it,” she shared. “Having an 11-year-old nephew with special needs deepened my appreciation for the work we do and the incredible accomplishments of our buddies.”

As the upcoming academic year approaches, both co-presidents are eager to grow the chapter and share their work with the broader Assumption community. They are confident that the chapter will continue to thrive beyond their graduation in 2025.

“We are always looking to grow our chapter, our knowledge, and our passions,” Brien stated in the announcement. “We want to prepare the next generation of leaders to take over. Our phenomenal executive team is more than capable of continuing our success.”
