WORCESTER—The Worcester Housing Authority (WHA) has completed the first phase of demolition in the redevelopment of Curtis Apartments.
Last week, beginning on July 30, crews demolished the building at 30-34 Great Brook Valley Ave. This followed the earlier demolition of buildings at 52-58 and 36-50 Great Brook Valley Way. Construction on the foundation of 52-58 Great Brook Valley Way has already started.
This significant milestone in the multi-phase reconstruction of Curtis Apartments comes after the Healey-Driscoll Administration awarded funding for Phase 2 of the project.
“Working with our development partner Trinity Financial, we are well on our way to reimagining what affordable housing looks like,” said WHA CEO Alex Corrales in a statement. “This is a big moment not only for the WHA but the City of Worcester as well.”
Upon completion, the new Curtis Apartments will feature 527 units, an increase from the current 372, including approximately 50 wheelchair-accessible units. Originally opened in 1952 to house returning war veterans, Curtis Apartments now supports residents through the WHA’s A Better Life program, which aims to help them achieve self-sufficiency and transition out of public housing.
