Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:
- Worcester African Festival: The hard work of the Massachusetts Organization of African Descendants’ (MOAD) cultural sub-committee and community partners comes to fruition on Saturday, Aug. 3, as the Worcester African Festival consumes the Worcester Common Oval from noon to 5 p.m. This festival, which aims to promote diversity of African cultures and unite the community, features artists, food vendors, merchandise vendors, deejays and much more.
- Jazz on the patio: A patio is one of the best settings to take in some jazz. Especially with a craft beer in your hand. This Saturday, from 6-9 p.m., the Worcester Jazz Collective plays tunes at the Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company, 55 Millbrook St.
- Grace Potter at Indian Ranch: Singer-songwriter Grace Potter has released five solo albums since the Nocturnals disbanded in 2015: Red Shoe Rebel (2002), Original Soul (2004), Midnight (2015), Daylight (2019), and Mother Road (2023). Going solo didn’t slow her down, and Potter’s headlining Indian Ranch on Sunday, Aug. 4, at Indian Ranch in Webster. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the show’s at 1:30 p.m.
- It’s fun to make doggie (or kitty) keychains: Nope, not a keychain for your dog, as he or she probably doesn’t drive. Teens are invited to stop by the Frances Perkins Branch of the Worcester Public Library on Friday, Aug. 2, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. to make a diamond painted dog keychain. Multiple patterns available. There are cat keychains to make, too, for the feline crowd.
- Pond-er this: Collect pond water and explore the tiny life within on Saturday at the EcoTarium from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Join expert staffers for a trip to the pond, using microscopes to view microorganisms. Registration required and these workshops fill up fast!
