WORCESTER—There are a whole lot of fun events going on in Worcester, all the time. Each week, the Worcester Guardian highlights events and activities you may want to consider over the weekend that is upon you.
Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:
- Classic hot dogs, the holidays and comedy: Yeah, it’s an unusual combination, but that doesn’t make it wrong. On Friday, Dec. 8, there’s a special holiday version of “Hot Dog!,” which is an event at which comedians spin a wheel to find out what their set is all about. It’s hosted by Shaun Connolly and Bryan O’donnell, it’s free, starts at 8 p.m. and takes place at George’s Coney Island on Southbridge Street.
- So punk, it’s nuts: The Worcester Punk Rock Flea Market puts on its second annual craft and flea winter market on Saturday, Dec. 9, and Sunday, Dec. 10, at Hotel Vernon in Kelley Square. The two-day event has more vendors and bands than we have room to list, but you can find that here. Here’s a taste. On Day 1, vendors include Apple Guy Flowers, Creepy Doll Lady, DebAuchery, Light Between the Stars and the Scrappy Rat. Bands are Eye Witness, Sorry Mister and Twelveyes. And on the second day, Acadia Emidy, Charmed Infusions, Light Between the Stars, Rainy Maple Sugar Candy and Quill and Crown join the many vendors. Live performances include Jake McKelvie, Captain Vampire and Too Fat to Fly. Also, grab some food from Big T’s BBQ.
- When Irish bands are playing: Fergus is a five-piece contemporary Irish band from Worcester, playing the songs of Irish songwriters and arrangers from the last 60 years, original songs and arrangements, and traditional Irish tunes. Fergus, which weaves electronica, Indian, Latin and Celtic threads into its sound, plays on Friday, Dec. 8, at the Worcester Hibernian Centre, Temple Street, from 7:30-10:30 p.m.
- Dance, contra style: On Saturday, Dec. 9, try out this “wicked fun” style of dancing led by caller Don Heinold and with live music by Old Bel Air at Wesley United Methodist Church, 114 Main St. Admission is $10-$12 individual, $6-$8 students and $25 families (suggested).
- Broken Horses—A Brandi Carlile tribute show: Colt & the Coyotes headline this foot-stompin’, soul stirring ride through Brandi’s catalog on Saturday, Dec. 9, at Electric Haze on Millbury Street. It’ll be a rich and gritty ride through her most iconic songs, with a lineup of Worcester artists to open for Colt & the Coyotes, including Giuliano, Sarah Louise French, Ali McTavish, Joshua Croke, Matt Sivazlian, Cote Shaw, Jena DelCid, Theresa Fiani, Genevieve Heyward, and the Heartbeats. Show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $22 in advance and $30 at the door.
