WORCESTER — Former Worcester City Councilor-at-Large Dennis L. Irish has died at his home in Florida, Mayor Joseph Petty’s office confirmed Thursday afternoon. He was a well-known figure in Worcester civic life and local government.
In a statement, Petty described Irish as “a loyal advocate of Worcester youth” and a “devoted public servant.” Irish also previously served as director of government and community relations at St. Vincent Hospital, according to the mayor’s office.
Irish, who attended North High School and Clark University, served multiple terms on the Worcester City Council as an at-large councilor beginning in the late 1990s, remaining a visible presence at City Hall through much of the 2000s. After losing his council seat in a citywide election, he later returned to fill a vacancy and continued to be involved in Worcester civic and governmental affairs into the following decade.
“Mayor Petty and the City of Worcester mourn the loss of a good friend and extend their condolences to his family and friends,” the statement said.
