Worcester Youth Council to host citywide convention for young leaders

The free event at Doherty Memorial High School aims to connect Worcester residents ages 14 to 24 with city officials, workshops and youth advocacy opportunities

Worcester kids who are interested in civic engagement, leadership development and advocacy get a chance to connect directly with city officials and peers in a convention at Doherty Memorial High School.

Sponsored by the city, the Worcester Youth Council hosts a free youth convention on Friday, May 22, bringing together residents ages 14 to 24 for an afternoon focused on leadership skills, networking and discussions about issues affecting young people in the city.

Organizers say the event is designed to create a space where Worcester youth can learn about local government and advocacy while also building relationships with peers interested in community involvement.

The convention features workshops, conversations with city officials and opportunities for attendees to share their thoughts on issues impacting youth in Worcester. The event also includes arts and crafts, games and food.

City Manager Eric Batista said the convention is intended to help encourage civic participation among younger residents.

“The Youth Convention is a great opportunity for young folks looking to get involved in their city and advocate for their peers,” Batista said in the announcement. “This is a great environment to meet like-minded individuals who want to grow into leaders that will continue to guide our city in the right direction.”

The Worcester Youth Council serves as a youth advisory body focused on issues affecting residents across the city, including education, mental health, public safety and civic engagement.

The convention runs from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Friday at Doherty Memorial High School, 299 Highland St. Adults accompanying youth are also welcome to attend.
