Worcester is offering free parking at two city lots through Tuesday morning for residents looking to move their vehicles out of flood-prone areas as a storm moves through the region.
Drivers can park free beginning at 8 p.m. Friday at the municipal lot at 40 Highland St. and the McGrath lot at 40 Salem St., next to the Worcester Public Library, according to a city announcement.
The city said the temporary measure is intended particularly for residents whose vehicles are normally parked in areas susceptible to flooding and who do not have another convenient place to move them during the storm.
Free parking remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, when normal rates resume. Vehicles parked during the free period will have until noon Tuesday to leave the lots without being charged.
The offer applies only to the Highland Street and McGrath lots. Normal rates remain in effect at all other city-owned parking lots and garages.
The city also warned that power and internet outages are possible during the storm. Downed power lines should be reported to 911. Downed tree branches that do not pose an immediate threat to public safety can be reported to Worcester 311, or to 911 when 311 is unavailable.
