12 HC Crusaders named academic all-district

Holy Cross student-athletes honored for academic and athletic excellence in at-large national selection

WORCESTER—A dazzling dozen Holy Cross student-athletes have been named to the 2024–2025 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District at-large team, the college announced in a release this week. The honor recognizes high-achieving students from a range of sports who excel both on the field and in the classroom.

The Crusaders named to the team are seniors Ginger Berry, Owen Egan, Emilie Fortunato, Meggan Fourie, Thomas Gale, Lindsay Hult, Calahan McPherson, John Mitchell, Nolan Schuermann, Luke Shoemaker, and Sally Zinsner, along with junior Abby Hornung. McPherson, Mitchell and Zinsner earned the distinction for the second consecutive year.

The at-large team encompasses athletes from beach volleyball, bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, rowing, skiing, water polo and wrestling.

Berry, a standout in both rowing and swimming, was named an Academic All-Patriot League honoree and helped lead the varsity eight boat to a second-place finish at the Jesuit Invitational. A semifinalist for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar of the Year Award, she graduated with a 3.79 GPA in Spanish and International Studies.

Egan, a three-time captain of the men’s golf team, leaves Holy Cross with the best career scoring average in program history (74.41). His 67-stroke final round at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate marked a career best. He earned a 3.63 GPA in Economics.

Fortunato, a defensive anchor for women’s ice hockey, graduated with 164 career blocked shots over 129 games and a 3.76 GPA in Neuroscience.

Fourie led the field hockey team in scoring with 15 goals and three assists, and was honored on All-Patriot League, All-ECAC, and All-Northeast Region teams. She graduated with a 3.62 GPA in Computer Science and Economics.

Gale, this year’s Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Year, set a program record with 24 wins in a season. He wrapped up his career with a 2.41 goals against average and 3.55 GPA in Psychology.

Hornung posted a .940 save percentage for women’s ice hockey and was named a Hockey East All-Star. She holds a 3.64 GPA in International Studies and Sociology.

Hult, captain of the women’s lacrosse team, tallied 106 ground balls and 80 caused turnovers in her career, finishing third in program history in the latter. She earned a 3.66 GPA in Sociology.

McPherson appeared in all 15 games for the men’s lacrosse team this year, adding to his career totals of 49 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. He graduated with a 3.81 GPA in Economics.

Mitchell led men’s lacrosse in scoring this season with 23 points and leaves Holy Cross with a 3.83 GPA in Economics.

Schuermann claimed the Patriot League individual title in golf and was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He averaged 74.00 strokes per round this season and graduated with a 3.57 GPA in Economics.

Shoemaker, a defensive stalwart on the lacrosse field, played in 50 games and registered 38 caused turnovers. He graduated with a 3.68 GPA in Biology.

Zinsner, a first-team All-Patriot League and Academic All-Patriot League honoree, scored 52 goals this season for women’s lacrosse and finished her career with 182 points. She graduated with a 3.70 GPA in English and Spanish.

All honorees demonstrated what the College Sports Communicators program celebrates: a commitment to academic achievement while competing at the highest collegiate level.
