Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:
- Magical movie music at Mechanics: On Saturday, May 4, embark on a cinematic journey under the direction of Roderick Macdonald, who leads the Worcester Symphony Orchestra through an evening of music from films. Some numbers in the show include those from “Inception,” “Gladiator,” “Dune,” “Star Wars,” “A Woman Under the Influence,” “Harry Potter” and many more. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
- To Kill a Mockingbird in Worcester: The Academy Award winning adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic comes to the Hanover Theater, with opening night on Friday, May 3, and shows continuing through Sunday. Set in Alabama in 1934, this “enduring story of racial injustice and childhood innocence centers on one of the most venerated characters in American literature, small-town lawyer Atticus Finch (starring Richard Thomas, no less!). - Rocket to the Rhythm Future Quartet: The Brian Barlow Concert Series presents the Rhythm Future Quartet on Friday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the Robert Jay Performing Arts Center at Saint John’s High School in Shrewsbury. This virtuosic acoustic jazz ensemble “has a straightforward agenda: to keep the spirit of Gypsy Jazz alive and expanding in today’s musical universe.
- EcoTarium Earth Day month events ends with Climate Hope concert: The Multiverse Concert Series continues with the Climate Hope Concert on Friday, May 3, as part of its month-long Earth Day celebration in the EcoTarium’s Alden Planetarium. This show interweaves music and science to tell stories of regeneration: projects working to heal not just our atmosphere, but our biosphere and society as a whole. - Mini-golf after dark, adult style: The Worcester Public Library at Salem Square gets transformed into an 18-hole mini golf course on Friday, May 3, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. A $50 ticket gets you into this 21-plus event with food, adult beverages (from the Redemption Rock Brewery) and music by the incomparable Giuliano.
