WORCESTER—Students at Assumption University will soon have a pub where they can wind down with a beer or glass of wine three nights a week.

Pierre’s Pub inside the Hagan Campus Center will also be a gathering place every day with food being served from noon to 11 p.m.

The pub received a positive vote for a request for a wine and malt pouring license from the Worcester License Commission after commissioners visited the campus to see exactly how the operation would work.

The 4,000-square-foot pub is the brainchild of students at the university. Tom Miller, a lawyer representing the college, told commissioners that students did market research and studied trends across college campuses before proposing the idea for the new pub.

“This type of campus center and campus gathering area is really popular with the students,” Miller said.

The area is a mix of high-top tables, couches and gathering areas “where students can come together,” Miller explained, adding that alcohol would be served from 7-11 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The system that will be used to check identifications of those using the pub was reviewed by Worcester Police Sgt. Thomas Needham of the Alcohol Enforcement Unit who said he was satisfied with it.

Christina Graziano, the general counsel for Assumption University, will serve as the manager of record for the liquor license. Graziano explained security measures that will be in place for guests of the university, including a sign-in process that is available to campus security, Worcester police, student affairs staff, and herself.

If needed, license commissioners could access that information as well, Graziano said.

The guest registration system allows university officials to revisit prior dates and times to see who was on campus, should there be any incidents requiring that information.

According to the University’s website, the pub is expected to include a gaming area, stage, billiards, televisions for sports and trivia and a fireplace.

“In today’s dynamic educational landscape, universities nurture not only knowledge but also vital social skills,” the website states. “Our student-driven pub fosters dialogue, friendships, and life skills in the company of friends, transcending its role as a mere hangout to become a nexus of creativity, culture, and community.”

Miller said the university was awaiting the delivery of new furniture for the area which is on the second floor above Charlie’s Snack Bar.

The snack bar offers grilled items, hand-crafted salads and sandwiches, prepackaged to-go items, pasta and pizzas daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
