Worcester’s got it going on. Each week, the Worcester Guardian highlights events and activities you may want to consider over the weekend ahead.
Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:
- Whether you’re a brother or whether you’re a mother: Stayin’ Alive nails the look and sound of the Bee Gees, the beloved supergroup that gained that shot to superstardom during the disco era, at this tribute at the Hanover Theatre on Friday, Jan. 19. But they had hits before that, and after, and Stayin’ Alive pays tribute to all of it, hitting everything from “Night Fever” to “Nights on Broadway” to “Massacchusetts.” Tickets are $24.50, $37.50, $49.50 and $64.50 depending on seat location. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
- Hey babe, take a walk with the Wildside: They call themselves the “best ‘80s hair band tribute on the planet.” Wildside headlines on Saturday, Jan. 20, at Rascals on James Street. From the band: “We play hair metal hits from ’80s bands such as Van Halen, AC/DC, Scorpions, Skid Row, Def Leppard, Ratt, Poison, Ozzy, you name it. And in addition to musicianship, we put on a performance to make you feel like you could be at your favorite band’s show.” The show starts at 9 a.m. Aerosol hairspray is not provided (but you are encouraged to use it before the show).
- Step inside the Poet’s Cauldron: Spoken word is bubbling up in the White Room at Crompton Collective on Green Street on Sunday, Jan. 21, from 6-p.m. Bedlam Book Cafe and Femme Bar sponsors the Poet’s Cauldron open mic led by Boston rapper Brandie Blaze. There’s also food available at the event, as well as beer from Redemption Rock Brewing Co., which celebrates its fifth anniversary.
- Learn the secrets of swordplay: Since the closing of Higgins Armory years ago, Worcester has very few events of this kind to attend. On Sunday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m., enjoy this live arms and armor show at the Worcester Art Museum. The audience learns how real swordsmen (and women) actually fought, and get a chance to try hefting a reproduction broadsword or rapier to get a feel for the real thing.
- Laugh it up for the parade: Loft 266 Bar & Lounge on Park Ave. is the place to be on Friday, Jan. 19, to blow off some steam by laughing it out. Thick Chick Comedy’s Serenity Jones headlines this night, which kicks off with a whiskey tasting and complimentary pizza at 6:30 p.m., joining local faves Jim Dorsey and Mike Keating. Yup, it’s an all-Irish lineup to benefit the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee.
