WORCESTER—A Worcester summer tradition is set to light up the night sky once again, as the city’s Independence Day Celebration returns to Cristoforo Colombo Park (East Park) now on Wednesday, July 2 — complete with food, music, family fun, and a fireworks show set to a local radio soundtrack that might just give longtime residents a hit of 1980s nostalgia.

The fireworks, originally scheduled for July 1, were postponed due to predicted storms, according to organizers.

Presented by M&T Bank in partnership with Discover Central Massachusetts, the free event kicks off at 5 p.m. with a food court, sponsor booths, kid-friendly activities, and live entertainment from WXLO 104.5, who will also broadcast music synchronized to the fireworks display later in the evening. The rain date is Wednesday, July 2.

Live music from Kamryn Richard begins at 7:30 p.m., setting the stage for the 9:30 p.m. fireworks show, which returns with the added flair of WXLO-curated music broadcast live. For those who remember the days of “SkyBlast,” the beloved WAAF-era event where rock music was synced with fireworks, it’s a familiar format — albeit now with less hard rock and hair metal.

“This incredible event marks the official start of summer and brings together residents, families, and visitors to celebrate our nation’s independence,” said Grace Lee, M&T Bank’s Regional President in Massachusetts, in the event announcement. “As a proud member of the Worcester community, M&T Bank is excited to contribute to this celebration that is steeped in tradition and showcases the city we’re so proud to serve.”

“[This] continues to be a signature celebration in our community,” added Monique Joseph, President of Discover Central Massachusetts. “It’s an incredible opportunity to highlight our city to both residents and visitors alike.”

The event is one of the city’s most beloved seasonal staples, drawing thousands to East Park to celebrate under the stars. City Manager Eric D. Batista called it a hallmark of Worcester’s summer calendar: “Residents look forward to [this] for the chance to come together, experience the spectacle of a great fireworks show, and celebrate the 4th of July.”

The celebration is free and open to the public, with parking and food vendors available on site. For more details, visit: discovercentralma.org/events/worcester-fireworks
