Bookmobile, sip and paint, tons of music: 5 fun weekend things

From soulful blues to a rolling library party, cheeky pottery nights to all-female rock tributes, here’s what’s happening around the city

Here are the Worcester Guardian’s five picks for things to do in Worcester this weekend:

  1. Johnny Blue Horn turns up the soul in Worcester: If you like your live music with grit, groove and a splash of brass, Johnny Blue Horn & The Caretakers are likely up your alley. The Boston-based band blends blues, jazz and rock into a rootsy, high-voltage sound that channels Van Morrison and Eric Clapton. Expect powerhouse vocals, slick guitar from Bobby Gus and a rhythm section that’ll rumble your seat. Catch them Saturday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. (doors at 6:30) in the WCUW Frontroom, 910 Main St., Worcester. Tickets are $15 cash at the door, with parking across the street in the Clark University lot.
  2. Rolling through the years: Celebrate 85 years of the Worcester Public Library’s beloved Bookmobile service this Saturday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the main library on Salem Square. Climb aboard Libby, Lilly, and Louis; meet special guests from city departments; and enjoy crafts, giveaways and refreshments. Free parking available.
  3. Cover girls, uncovered: Electric Haze hosts an all-female-fronted tribute night this Saturday, Nov. 8, at 26 Millbury St. The lineup spans generations of sound: ObsCURE (The Cure) at 7 p.m., Gretchen & the Banshees (Siouxsie & the Banshees) at 8, The Rumours (Fleetwood Mac) at 9, Colt and the Coyotes (Brandi Carlile) at 10, and The Yellow Lemons (Incubus) at 11. Doors at 6 p.m., 21+.
  4. Young at art: The Worcester Chamber Music Society presents The Joy of Youth on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m. in Jeanne Y. Curtis Hall at Assumption University. The program celebrates the brilliance of composers who created some of their most stirring works early in life—Boulanger, Mozart, and Brahms—each capturing youth in full bloom. Pre-concert talk at 3:30 p.m.; venue is handicap accessible.
  5. Sip, swear and splatter: Unleash your inner artist—or your inner sailor—at the Potty Mouth Paint & Sip on Friday, Nov. 7, from 7–9 p.m. at Clayground. Choose from more than 140 cheeky stencils or freestyle your own profanity masterpiece. It’s adults-only (18+; BYOB if you’re 21+), so let loose, paint whatever the hell you want, and make yourself that mug you’ve always needed. $5 reservation fee plus the cost of your pottery piece; registration required.
