WORCESTER — Worcester has 26 residents running in this year’s Boston Marathon, which takes place on April 15.
The Worcester Guardian is putting the spotlight on these amazing runners leading up to this 128th historical race.
Here, we get to know Rob Orell, who is 28, and went to Holy Name Central Catholic High School and Nichols College. A Worcester resident, Orell teaches at a special education school and coaches football at Assumption University.
Reason for running: For a friend and co-worker who passed away from breast cancer in April. Before she passed she named her group “Team 143” for “I love you.” Since then I have run every race in a 143 shirt.
Marathon history: I have run one marathon, two half-marathons, and many others. In 2023, I ran 11 races.
Biggest inspiration for running: In honor of my friend Meliss (aka Melissa)
Favorite after-race treat: Donuts! Can’t think of a better way to celebrate a run.
Best part of the race: I have never run the Boston Marathon before, but my favorite part of the process so far has been the fundraising.
Gatorade or water? Water
Favorite part of the race:
Training tip: Find your “why.” When things get tough, remember your “why” to push you through.
Sneaker choice: Nike!
Biggest distraction/obstacle: Injuries. Playing football has definitely beaten my body up but the amazing people at Revived Athlete have kept me going throughout the journey.
Are you running the 2024 Boston Marathon? We’d love to feature you, too. Charlene Arsenault can be reached at carsenault@theworcesterguardian.org
