WORCESTER—Shortly after the season ender, the Worcester Bravehearts announced that manager Alex Dion is stepping down from his head coaching duties, prompting the start of the search for a new head coach.
During his seven seasons with the Bravehearts, Dion led the team to a remarkable 222 wins and two Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England championships, including a title in 2019 as head coach.
Under his leadership in 2023, the Bravehearts set a Futures League record for the most wins in a single season and developed over 15 players who were subsequently drafted by Major League Baseball teams, including Ben Rice, who now plays first base for the New York Yankees.
Reflecting on his time with the Bravehearts, Dion expressed his gratitude:
“Thank you, Worcester,” he said in the announcement. I have spent the last seven summers in a Bravehearts uniform and couldn’t be more proud of what we have accomplished here. I am especially grateful to my wife, Erin, and my wonderful family for their support. We have grown our family during our time here in Worcester, and now it’s time for me to spend my summers with them.”
Dion went on to thank several individuals and groups for their contributions to his tenure.
“Thank you to Dave Peterson for your unwavering support and friendship, the Creedon Family for bringing baseball back to Worcester, the Vaccaro family for treating my family like your own, my assistant coaches for their hard work, and all the umpires and league members who made the last seven years memorable.
To our fans, you have stuck with us through a pandemic and tough times, and I am so thankful for your support. Roll Hearts!”
Bravehearts General Manager Dave Peterson expressed hope that Dion would remain a part of the organization.
“Alex is a true professional who dedicated himself to the Bravehearts season after season,” said Peterson in a statement. “We had a great relationship and a mutual understanding that he took care of the players while the front office took care of the fans. I hope he will still be able to make an impact on the Bravehearts for years to come.”
Dion will continue to serve as head coach for the Milford High School baseball team. A Westborough native, he also previously coached American Legion baseball for Northborough Post 234.
