WORCESTER—The Burncoat High School Spirit Team snagged a spot at the National Dance Team Competition (NDTC) Nationals in Orlando, Florida, following strong performances at the State Championships. The team placed second in jazz and third in hip hop, earning their way to compete at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in February 2025.
In addition to their dance team success, Burncoat once again competes in the Game Day Live division, which pairs the Burncoat Dance Team with the Burncoat Pep Band in synchronized cheer and music routines. This marks the sixth trip for the dance team and the second for the pep band, making Burncoat the only school from the Northeast competing this year.
“Our program requires students to collaborate with their peers on artistic projects and performances. It fosters teamwork, communication, and social skills, which are valuable both within and outside the arts context,” said Kellie Shea, director of the dance department at Burncoat, in the announcement. “I’m proud to say that we are the only Spirit Program in the Northeast competing at this national competition this year.”
Raising funds for nationals
To make the trip possible for its 60 student athletes, the Burncoat Spirit Team has set an ambitious $96,000 fundraising goal. The team hosts its annual fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 22, 2025, at Luciano’s Union Station in Worcester. The event features a fashion show organized by Karon Shea Model Management, with city officials and local business leaders taking the runway to support the cause.
The Burncoat Arts Magnet Program, established in 1985, has been instrumental in providing students with a well-rounded education in dance, music, and the arts. Shea emphasized the importance of these programs, noting that the graduation rate for students in the program remains at 100%.
“We hope everyone spreads the word, attends the event, and contributes to help us make this possible,” Kellie said in the release.
