A large emergency response presence is expected at Worcester Regional Airport on Wednesday, but Massport is telling nearby residents there is no cause for alarm.
The Massachusetts Port Authority conducts a major emergency response exercise Sept. 23 at the airport, bringing together local and state public safety agencies to test how they would respond to a serious incident there.
The exercise is required by the Federal Aviation Administration every three years, according to a Massport announcement.
Massport Fire Rescue participates alongside the Worcester Police Department, Worcester Fire Department, Worcester EMS, Massachusetts State Police and other mutual aid partners.
The drill is intended to test communication, coordination and emergency response among the agencies that could be called upon during a major incident at the airport.
Residents in neighborhoods surrounding Worcester Regional Airport may see an increased number of emergency vehicles from multiple agencies in the area while the exercise is underway.
Despite the activity, the airport will remain operational throughout the drill, Massport said.
Massport owns and operates Worcester Regional Airport, along with Boston Logan International Airport, Hanscom Field and public terminals in the Port of Boston.
